摘要:While use naturally durable wood materials and wood protection of wooden structures are well acknowledged especially from the last century and presently with advanced wood protection technology around the globe, recognising the use of durable and treated woods since ancient times would allow us to appreciate how valuable wood protection is to the wood construction and building industry globally. Some fine examples are illustrated in the use of naturally durable wood materials and cultural artifacts, the utilization of treated wood by superficial protection with natural plant-based “preservatives” (mainly various plant oils) to stabilize wood moisture and/or arrest wood biodeterioration, since biblical, ancient and medieval history until the end of the 19th century. We present a brief historical account of wood durability and wood treatment from various parts of the world to imply a strong historical emphasis to keep wood structures free of biodeterioration for longer durations combined with interest to conserve wood for aesthetics since the dawn of civilization. Indeed mankind will perceivably maintain the age-old tradition of favouring durable woods or treated woods in the new millennium while now being challenged with strict environmental regulations in wood protection applications prompting active development of environmentally preferred wood protection technologies to accommodate a growing environmentally conscious global society.
