报告摘要:
This paper explores the essential role of wood in architecture, not solely as a building material, but also as a crucial factor in the political administration and consolidation of territorial and human control by the Spanish Empire in its American colonies, specifically in what is now Colombia. Within this framework, the familiarity of Spanish carpenters with local wood varieties and the exchange of techniques with Indigenous, Africans, and mixed-race artisans emerge as key aspects of this study. The paper examines carpentry not as a mere passive transfer of technical knowledge, with the Spanish imposing their practices, but rather as dynamic phenomenon where local conditions drive adaptations and technical innovations. To achieve this, the paper integrates the built environment with historical documentation to reveal how human, political, and environmental factors impacted the various uses of wood in framing carpentry throughout colonial Colombia during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
